Wake Tech Names Experienced Math Educator as New Dean

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 22, 2015) - Sharon Welker, an experienced community college instructor and administrator, has been named Wake Tech’s new Dean of Mathematics and Sciences. Welker is responsible for supporting faculty as they strive for quality educational experiences for students in engineering, mathematics, and science courses. She oversees the Associate in Science degree, ensuring it meets institutional and accreditation outcomes. Welker also leads the division’s initiatives in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), raising awareness of the important role Wake Tech plays in this critical career area.

“I am honored and excited to continue my work at Wake Tech in this new position. The faculty and staff inspire me with their dedication to helping students, and their thoughtful and scholarly approach to teaching and learning,” Welker says. “I will strive to lead our division to continue Wake Tech’s tradition of excellent service to the community.”

Welker has 25 years of experience in higher education. She most recently served as Wake Tech’s Department Head of Mathematics & Physics. Before coming to Wake Tech, Welker served as the Division Chair of Mathematics at Catawba Valley Community College. She taught mathematics courses at both colleges, including transfer courses through Calculus III and Differential Equations, developmental math, and courses for career programs and academic success.

Welker earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Education with Highest Honors from Auburn University, her master’s in Mathematics Education from UNC-Pembroke, and her education specialist degree in Higher Education Administration from Appalachian State University.
