Wake Tech Hosts 3D Printing Open House

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 15, 2015) - 3D printing enthusiasts converged on Wake Tech today for a unique “meet-up.” Industry representatives and private individuals brought their 3D printers to display and to discuss the latest developments in the field.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, or AM, is a process in which a digital model directs the layering of materials to create a three-dimensional object of almost any shape, including industrial parts. It is expected to revolutionize industries of all kinds, from manufacturing to prosthetics to aerospace engineering. It could also someday be available for consumer use.

“The opportunities are endless for the future of 3D printing,” says Russell Wahrmann, Administrative Department Head for the Applied and Engineering Technologies Division. “We’re training students in skills they need to be on the forefront of this emerging technology. Two of our recent graduates already have jobs utilizing 3D printers.”

Wake Tech currently offers six courses that include 3D printing and is setting up laboratories to accommodate 3D printing technology. The effort is part of a grant award of more than $825,000 from the National Science Foundation’s ATE (Advanced Technological Education) program. Wake Tech is using the funds to enhance applied engineering technologies and college/university transfer programs.
