RALEIGH, N.C. (December 15, 2015) - A generous grant from the Walmart Foundation will boost Wake Tech’s efforts to help veterans translate military experience into employment and career advancement. The college has received a $100,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program, which provides grants to nonprofits that assist underserved populations.

 

The funds will support Wake Tech’s Accelerated Career Transformation Services (ACTS) program, which was established with a 2013 grant from the Walmart Foundation. ACTS supports veterans and their spouses by offering accelerated training, certification opportunities, financial assistance, and social support to allow for a faster and smoother transition to employment. Wake Tech works with local employers to identify how graduates of the program can fill their needs.

 

Three career tracks have been identified in which Military Occupation Specialist (MOS) training will translate into accelerated programs of study: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), EMT/Paramedic, and Apartment Maintenance Technician. As part of the ACTS program Wake Tech also offers additional training courses to earn industry-recognized certifications and credentials.

The ACTS program has had a positive impact on veterans at Wake Tech. Many have landed jobs before completing their training; one woman found work that allowed her to transition out of homelessness.
