Wake Tech Offering Additional Veterans Services

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 5, 2016) -Thanks to a grant from the Aurora Foundation, veterans at Wake Tech will now be “recognized” in a new way by the college community. Special identification badges have been created for staff, faculty and students who have served in the military. The badges bear a small American flag to honor veterans who attend classes or work at Wake Tech and to allow them to connect with others who have served.

In conjunction with the new IDs, Wake Tech is offering “Green Zone” training for faculty and staff. The training, also funded by the Aurora Foundation grant, educates participants about the issues and concerns veterans face and identifies individuals who can offer assistance, creating a more friendly campus environment for students who are veterans. These helpers are not experts who try to “fix” problems – they lend veterans a sympathetic ear and help them find appropriate resources.

  1. Aurora Foundation has provided Wake Tech with $5,000 for these new programs. Aurora assists colleges and universities serving veterans – to help vets who enter the scholastic environment to graduate and enter the workforce.

“We want Wake Tech to be a safe and supportive place – and a productive one – for our students who are veterans,” says Sam Strickland, SVP for Military and Veteran Programs and Multi-Campus Support. “This training will help our faculty and staff respond to their needs appropriately and professionally.”

Wake Tech provides a variety of services for veterans and their families pursuing education, training, and professional development. Those services include assistance with financial aid and VA benefits, priority registration, accelerated career training, and options for translating military training into workforce credentials.
