RALEIGH, N.C. (May 14, 2016) - Wake Tech’s spring 2016 commencement exercises marked an end and a beginning for more than 1,600 graduates receiving degrees and diplomas. The ceremony, held at the Raleigh Convention Center, included more than 700 of those graduates, who participated in the ceremony.
The grads were encouraged to get involved:
“Use what you have learned here to make a better life,” Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott advised, "for yourself, your family, and your community.”
“Every moment is an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life,” said Sig Hutchinson, commencement speaker and Vice Chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners.
“Do everything 110%!” Baleigh Scheibner, SGA President, told her peers.
Graduates ranged in age from 16 to 73 and featured sisters Safaa and Marwa Tazzit – who earned Associate in Science (AS) degrees – and mother and daughter Ruth and Torri Clark. Ruth earned diplomas in Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting while Torri complete an AAS in Medical Office Administration. Willie Thorpe, who once battled drug addiction, first came to Wake Tech to pursue a GED; he has now earned an Associate in Arts and plans to transfer to a university for a bachelor’s degree.
Forty-two students from the Wake Early College of Health and Sciences received an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree from Wake Tech – earning college degrees before they will officially receive their high school diplomas on Friday.
Graduates can now request a Co-Curricular Transcript, or CCT, that documents extracurricular involvement. The documents can help supplement a resume for employment, or give graduates an edge when transferring to a university. CCTs accompany regular academic transcripts and highlight the leadership development and career preparation gained through participation in clubs, sports, volunteer projects, and student government.
