New Transfer Option Available for Dental Hygiene Students

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 8, 2024) – Graduates of Wake Tech's Dental Hygiene program now have an opportunity to earn their bachelor's degree online, thanks to a new partnership with Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Va.

The new articulation agreement is Wake Tech's first university transfer partnership allowing Dental Hygiene graduates to pursue an advanced degree in their career field.

Students with a minimum of 24 credit hours may apply for admission to ODU, transfer their credits and begin online coursework toward a bachelor's degree. ODU also offers an online Master of Science in Dental Hygiene.

Students will receive student support services from ODU, including advising, success coaching, technical support and career services support. They will also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships and take advantage of a payment plan to assist with financial planning.

"The partnership between the Dental Hygiene programs at Wake Tech and Old Dominion will be an invaluable resource in furthering the education of our students to expand their career options in the dental field,” said Brenda Maddox, department head of Dental Hygiene at Wake Tech. "It will open opportunities in the profession that require a bachelor's degree, such as teaching, research, marketing, sales and public health."

Currently, 44 students are enrolled in Wake Tech's Dental Hygiene AAS degree program. All 19 graduates in May 2024 completed their National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and clinical exam on their first attempt.

Wake Tech's Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Students get hands-on training in the dental hygiene clinic at the Perry Health Sciences Campus, which offers dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and X-rays for patients ages 4 and older.

All Wake Tech academic programs offer an opportunity to transfer credits to a four-year college or university. Learn more about other university partnerships at transfer.waketech.edu.
