College Joins Hurricane Relief Effort for Western North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 4, 2024) – Wake Tech is joining the North Carolina Community College System's relief effort to support sister colleges impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The Hurricane Helene Community College Response and Recovery Fund aims to support the 14 affected colleges and their surrounding communities in western North Carolina as they face widespread damage, power outages, water shortages and loss of communication services. Donations to the fund will provide critical assistance for recovery efforts in the storm's aftermath, including restoring services and resources essential to students, faculty and staff.

The Wake Tech Foundation is donating $10,000 to the relief fund. Additionally, the Student Government Association is making a $3,000 donation on behalf of all Wake Tech students. The college invites all college organizations, departments, faculty, staff and students to also support fellow community college students and employees in western North Carolina.

"We know how much our state is hurting as we see and hear the impacts of devastation from Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina," said Brian Gann, vice president of Enrollment and Student Services at Wake Tech. "We know they will have ongoing needs for months or even years to come. I am glad we as a college can offer some support to reach and rally around them as they recover and rebuild."

"The Wake Tech Foundation, on behalf of Wake Tech faculty, staff and students, supports our colleagues and neighbors in western North Carolina," said Matt Smith, vice president of Development and Strategic Partnerships at Wake Tech. "It is our privilege to stand with them now and in the future as additional needs arise."

More than 6,000 employees and nearly 74,000 students are impacted by the storm damage as colleges work to support their communities, with many serving as emergency response locations and working to re-establish campus operations.

Donations can be made online by visiting www.NCCCF.org or www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/foundation and clicking on the "Give Today" button. The minimum donation amount is $5. The Hurricane Helene Community College Response and Recovery Fund is prominently featured as the top option in the drop-down menu on the donation page.

Additionally, the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund supports hurricane victims, their communities and the recovery effort.
