RALEIGH, N.C. (June 23, 2026) – Wake Tech Community College has been awarded a $100,000 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the State Library of North Carolina to develop an innovative, collegewide artificial intelligence (AI) learning initiative focused on critical thinking.

The 12-month grant, funded through the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, will support the creation of an interactive "Unlocking AI" student challenge designed to help Wake Tech students better understand and effectively use AI tools in academic, professional and everyday settings.

The project brings together staff from the college's Care Center, Library Services, the Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) and Academic Technology and Support Services to design and deliver engaging, short-form learning content. The challenge will use interactive features such as video scenarios, student-led content and decision-based pathways to guide participants through real-world situations where AI can support problem-solving, research, writing and career preparation.

"The ability to think critically about AI tools is an essential skill for today's students," said Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. "This project reflects our commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and experience they need to succeed in a rapidly changing workforce."

Students will be able to access the challenge through a customizable digital platform, with support available both in person and online. The initiative will also include workshops, faculty engagement opportunities and targeted outreach across multiple academic programs.

A collegewide kickoff event is planned for January, followed by a series of support workshops hosted by library and TLC staff through the Spring semester. The project will also provide enrichment opportunities for courses in English, Communication & Theatre, math, life sciences, Wake Tech's non-degree College & Career Readiness program and First Year Academy, which is a dedicated support system designed to help students transition to college-level academics.

The initiative builds on previous LSTA-funded work at Wake Tech, including the creation of a combined TLC and library location at the Beltline Education Center. It also aligns with the State Library of North Carolina's strategic goal of expanding access to innovative library services.
