Peer Tutoring

Peer tutors provide an additional tutoring option for Wake Tech students. Peer tutors are current students who are dedicated to helping others. They have completed the course(s) they tutor with a grade of A or B, are recommended by an instructor and participate in regular training activities.

Assistance is available for math, chemistry, biology, physics, economics, accounting and computer classes.

There are several reasons to try peer tutoring:

  • Get better grades
  • Study more efficiently
  • Meet other strong students

Students may sign up for a 50-minute, one-on-one session either in-person or online. On-campus sessions are held in Wake Tech libraries. Tutoring is not available for all subjects on every campus, so check different campuses to find what you need.

Become a Peer Tutor

By becoming a Peer Tutor, you help other Wake Tech students be successful, deepen your understanding of the subject matter and improve your communication skills.

Peer Tutors must be a current Wake Tech student, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have received an A or B grade from Wake Tech in the course(s) they will tutor.

The hiring process occurs during the second half of both the Fall and the Spring semesters, but applications may be submitted at any time. Students need to submit two recommendations, one of which must be from a Wake Tech faculty member. Applicants are notified by email if the selection committee wishes to interview them.

Students who are selected as Peer Tutors must complete six hours of training before they can begin tutoring. Five additional mandatory training sessions are held throughout the semester. Peer Tutors are part-time employees of Wake Tech and can work up to 10 hours per week.

The Peer Tutoring program has been awarded International Tutor Training Program Certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), which recognizes Wake Tech's commitment to providing tutors with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver effective academic support.
