The Essentials of Project Management

This instructor-led training introduces participants to the basics of project management. It combines lecture and discussion with the hands-on application of useful project management principles, tools, and techniques through applied case study exercises. The course covers the basics of all project management life-cycle processes including initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and control, and closing.

Course Objectives

Define and recognize the fundamental terminology of the project management discipline

Identify all process groups of the project management lifecycle

Prioritize the primary project constraints of the project

Identify and assess the relative importance of key project stakeholders

Identify key project deliverables and decompose to build a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Formulate an activities list required to produce the project's deliverables and work packages

Build a project schedule, identify its critical path and determine relative float/slack for activities

Identify pertinent roles and responsibilities required to complete the project activities

Formulate a budget estimate for the project

Identify key communication elements of the project

Effectively and more accurately report on a project's progress, status and forecast

Assess key project risks and formulate action plans to minimize the project's exposure to them

Develop and deliver a project summary or final report to key stakeholders

Introduction to Project Management: Definition of a Project, Projects vs. Programs, Project Management Lifecycle; Project Management Terminology and Triple Constraints

Initiating a Project: Project Initiation: Evaluation, Selection and Prioritization; Stakeholder Analysis; Project Charter; and Project Management Organization Types

Planning a Project: Scope Planning, Scope Decomposition, Work Breakdown Structure, Activity Definition, Activity Sequencing, Activity Duration Estimating, Network Diagramming/Critical Path, Schedule Compression, Resource Planning and Cost Estimating and Budgeting

Executing and Controlling a Project: Project Communications, Budget and Schedule Performance Management (Earned Value), Status Reporting, Project Risk Management, Project Change Control and Project Quality Management

Closing a Project: Contract Closeout, Administrative Closure, Lessons Learned and Final Reporting
