RALEIGH, NC (December 1, 2025) – Wyatt Cumbo, one of the original members of Wake Tech's Police Department, has been appointed chief of police. He received his new badge in a special ceremony, a symbol of trust and responsibility as he steps into his leadership role to keep the college community safe.

Cumbo succeeds Michael Penry, who is retiring after leading the department since it was established more than 13 years ago. Penry built a strong foundation for campus safety and security, and Cumbo is ready to build on that legacy with fresh strategies for a growing college community.

"Chief Cumbo has been an integral part of our public safety efforts since day one," said Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. "His leadership and commitment to community policing make him the ideal choice to guide our department into the future."

As chief, Cumbo oversees emergency response planning and manages security operations across Wake Tech's seven campuses and the Beltline Education Center. His approach emphasizes community-based policing, working closely with students, faculty and staff to create a safe, welcoming environment that supports learning and success.

"It's a privilege to lead this team," Cumbo said. "We're committed to staying ahead of safety challenges and building strong connections with students, faculty and staff. Together, we'll make sure Wake Tech remains a place where everyone feels secure and supported."

Cumbo brings more than 25 years of law enforcement experience to his new role. Before joining Wake Tech, he served as a deputy with the Wake County Sheriff's Office and as a school resource officer at Carnage Middle School in Raleigh. He is also a U.S. Army veteran.
