RALEIGH, N.C. (April 10, 2025) – Wake Tech's Southern Wake Campus was buzzing Thursday as more than 200 of the area's brightest middle and high school students competed in the annual North Carolina Regional Math Contest.
Students representing schools from Wake, Durham and Orange counties tested their mathematics understanding in four levels – Level I through Comprehensive – tackling timed challenges that test logic, speed and advanced problem-solving skills.
This year's top performers are:
- Level I: Andrew Chen, Smith Middle School
- Level II: Max Desaikov, Smith Middle School
- Level III: Ryan Guo, Davis Drive Middle School
- Comprehensive: Eric Zhu, Cary Academy
"These students represent the next generation of innovators and critical thinkers," said John Bakken, dean of Wake Tech's Math & Science Division. "It's a privilege to host this competition and see so much talent and energy in one place."
Wake Tech is one of 12 regional test sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to participate in the State Mathematics Contest. The state contest was initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
