Barbering Students Offer Free Haircuts to Gain Experience

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 20, 2021) – Wake Tech barbering students offered haircuts today at Black Friday Market in Downtown Raleigh. The future barbers set up their “pop-up” barbershop to provide free haircuts to gain experience. The event coincided with Black History Month and National Entrepreneurship Week.

“This is a great way for students to polish their skills and see what is involved in running a business,” said barbering instructor Alton Mitchell. “We want them to be successful entrepreneurs.”

Students provided their services to several clients, including Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. Faculty members were also on hand to assist students and answer questions about the program.

Wake Tech barbering students need 1,500 hours of hands-on experience to graduate. Events like this help them meet that requirement and provide valuable networking opportunities. The pop-up barbershop at Black Friday Market was so successful, there will be another at the same location on March 6.

The Wake Tech Workforce Continuing Education School of Barbering is revitalizing the art of barbering, for the ultimate grooming experience and professional atmosphere. Students learn how to provide a variety of services, including hair cutting, shaving, beard trimming, and face and scalp massages. They also learn how to apply hair color and hair tonics. After apprenticing with a licensed barber for at least a year, these future hair care entrepreneurs are eligible to sit for the Registered Barber License that is required by North Carolina Board of Barber Examiners to be a professional barber.
