Virtual Run Raises $2,000 for Wake Tech Students

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 26, 2020) – More than 185 Wake Tech supporters laced up their sneakers and lifted their spirits while raising $2,000 for students during the college’s inaugural Reach and Rally Virtual Run.

“The event was a huge success,” said Luanne Burns, assistant director of Student Activities and run organizer. “I am so pleased with the participation and support from students, faculty, staff and the community. In addition to North Carolina, we had participants from Ohio, Texas, California and Louisiana.”

Student Activities decided to organize the virtual run as a way for students to stay active but safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Practicing social distancing, participants ran, walked, or biked nearly 900 miles on their own schedule over the course of two weeks. Ninety percent of participants who logged their time online completed a 5k.

During registration, they chose their donor level -- bronze for $5, silver for $10 and gold for $20, which directly supports Wake Tech’s Rally Fund.

Wake Tech’s Rally Fund is designed to provide wrap-around assistance to support emergency student needs and provide completion and first-generation scholarships. The fund is particularly relevant now as many students are finding themselves in need of technology, food, and other emergency assistance as a result of the pandemic.

All participants who submitted their miles and time will receive a commemorative medal in the mail.
