Raleigh 911 Operators to Receive Training at Public Safety Education Campus
RALEIGH, N.C. (January 16, 2019) - 911 operators who work for the City of Raleigh are now receiving training at Wake Tech's Public Safety Education Campus.
The 480-hour training program will be taught in two 12-week courses from January until April.
The comprehensive curriculum teaches students how to dispatch fire, emergency medical and police calls as well as handle radio communications with first responders. In addition, students will train on state-of-the-art simulators and consoles at the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center, also known as Raleigh-Wake 911.
“We’re excited about partnering with Wake Tech, the state’s largest community college,” said Dominick Nutter, Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center director. “This partnership will ensure our staff receives the all-important training they need. The better trained we are the better we can help those who need us.”
The center provides dispatching and centralized communications for four EMS agencies, eight law enforcement agencies, and 20 fire departments, serving more than one million residents in an area of 860 miles. The 911 Center employs a highly trained staff using the latest in technology in order to maintain a high commitment to public safety.
Glenn Mitchell, Wake Tech’s director of law enforcement training, said the college is excited to partner with the county’s largest employer of 911 operators to provide life-saving emergency communications skills.
As a part of the partnership, future students who successfully complete the training will be considered for interview opportunities for employment with the City of Raleigh.
“We know from speaking with various agencies in Wake County and beyond there is a need for further, more advanced telecommunicator training, which this new program provides,” Mitchell said. “This training is designed to help telecommunicators be better prepared for the job market as well as help agencies have a better trained pool of applicants.”
