Local Students Compete in Annual Math Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 21, 2019) - Middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 29th annual Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Southern Wake Campus, included more than 230 students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, and Lee Counties.

Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they’ve completed: Levels I, II, and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who’ve had more than three years of math.

Top honors went to:

  • Spencer Thomas, Smith Middle School, Level I
  • Brian Zhang, Carnage Middle School,  Level II
  • Michael Dai, Smith Middle School, Level III
  • Alvin Chen, Enloe High School, Comprehensive

The top performers move on to state finals competitions in their categories.

Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
