Wake Tech Students and Instructors Build Houses for Charity

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 3, 2010) - Students and instructors in the Baking and Pastry Arts Program at Wake Technical Community College volunteered their time and talents for a good cause. The group spent more than 50 hours building gingerbread creations for the annual Gingerbread House Benefit at the Umstead Hotel in Cary. The fundraiser supports Triangle Family Services, a local non-profit that helps families in need. Four Wake Tech entries were auctioned off, and brought in more than $300! Students and instructors crafted four unique structures for the event: A "North Pole Construction Company," by instructors Caralyn House, Norma Miller, and Leigh Shearin, and baking student Amy Kato. A "Gingerbread Inn," by student Jessica Morek. A "Gingerbread Church," also by student Jessica Morek. A "Gingerbread House," by adjunct instructor Jill Leckey. The edible structures were made of gingerbread, gum paste, and fondant; the decorations were candies of all kinds. For the North Pole Construction Company, the students and instructors used ice cream cones for the trees, sugar cubes for the dog house, and marshmallows for the snowman. The roof tiles were crafted with Necco wafers and Hersey's kisses. Morek's Gingerbread church featured sugar "glass" windows with a flickering light inside. This was the fourth year that Wake Tech baking students and instructors have created gingerbread houses for Triangle Family Services' Gingerbread House Benefit Auction.
