Wake Tech Named A "Great College to Work For"

Chronicle of Higher Education Honors Select Schools Nationwide

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 25, 2011) - For the third consecutive year, Wake Technical Community College has been named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The Chronicle is a leading nationwide publication featuring news and information about higher education. Wake Tech was one of only 26 two-year colleges across the country to earn the distinction, and was honored in seven categories, two more than last year. Those categories are:

  • Collaborative Governance
  • Confidence in Senior Leadership
  • Supervisor or Department Chair Relationship
  • Diversity
  • Facilities, Workspace & Security
  • Work/Life Balance
  • Respect and Appreciation

In addition, Wake Tech was named to the 2011 Great Colleges Honor Roll for receiving the most recognition in its size category.

"Faculty and staff are the heart of Wake Tech and we want them to know they're valued," says Dr. Stephen Scott, WTCC president. "We try to provide a supportive work environment that recognizes excellence and offers challenges and opportunities for each employee to grow and advance."

Distinction as a "great college" is based on an institutional audit that captures demographics and workplace policies, and relies heavily on the input of employees. The Chronicle surveyed more than 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities across the nation. Wake Tech earned the distinction among two-year colleges with 10,000 or more students.

"Even in a down economy when many colleges are freezing salaries or having layoffs, employees still find good in their work," says Jeffrey J. Selingo, editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education. "This program shows that great workplaces are about more than just dollars and cents. The ‘Great Colleges to Work For' have created environments where people feel appreciated and valued."

The Chronicle works with the consulting firm ModernThink LLC to conduct the surveys and analyze the results. Great Colleges to Work For is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
