Wake Tech Recognized for Public Safety Training
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 23, 2012) - Wake Tech has been honored for its commitment and excellence in training local law enforcement personnel. Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan presented the “Chief’s Citation” award to three leaders in Wake Tech’s Public Safety Training Division. Dr. James T. Edwards, Dean of Public Safety, Jonathan Gregory, Law Enforcement Training Coordinator, and Mike Jarmon, a Wake Tech instructor and retired Raleigh police officer, were recognized for their successful partnership with the Raleigh Police Department.
Wake Tech has provided the Raleigh PD with equipment, classrooms, and instructors for basic law enforcement training and mandated firearms training, as well as the Patrol Rifle and RADAR programs. Raleigh police have also used the specially-equipped training rooms at Wake Tech’s Public Safety Education Campus for classes such as SCAT (Subject Control and Arrest Techniques) and Simunitions. Wake Tech allowed access to the facility during a holiday break to accommodate the officers.
Chief Dolan had high praise for the reality-based training his officers have received at Wake Tech. “Wake Tech went above and beyond our expectations,” he said. “The college’s expert approach allowed our instructors to deliver a creative training program that will better prepare officers for their work.”
Dr. Edwards is proud of the Public Safety Training Division’s insistence on going beyond traditional norms. “We continuously strive to offer the most effective training, using the latest tools and technologies, so that officers have the skills they need to perform and to continue to evolve,” Edwards says.
Wake Tech trains about 8,000 law enforcement personnel each year, including those from local police departments, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the NC Department of Public Safety. About 75 students also enroll in Wake Tech’s Basic Law Enforcement Training Program each year.
