Wake Tech Foundation Leader Honored by Wake Education Partnership

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 30, 2012) - Virginia Parker, Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Wake Tech Foundation, has been awarded the 2012 Vernon Malone Friend of Education Award by Wake Education Partnership. The annual award is the highest honor given by the Partnership. It recognizes a Wake County citizen who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the betterment of public education. The award was presented at Wake Education Partnership’s 2012 Education Summit, held today in Cary.

At Wake Tech, Parker cultivates strategic partnerships that bring private support and resources to the college. Parker is a leader in the community, serving in a variety of roles with local nonprofit programs. She chairs the Lightner Achievers Board of the YMCA and serves as a board member for the John E. Rex Endowment, the Junior League of Raleigh, and the North Carolina Theatre. She also serves on Wake Education Partnership’s Leadership Council and the Education Committee of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. She is an advisor to Triangle Family Services and ATHLEAD, her son’s leadership initiative for high school athletes.

“Virginia’s selfless dedication to public education in Wake County and related causes for so many years makes her an ideal person to earn this year’s Friend of Education Award,” said Steve Parrott, president of Wake Education Partnership. “We’re proud to add her name to an illustrious list of previous winners, which includes Gov. and Mrs. James B. Hunt, Rev. Marion Robinson (our 2011 honoree), and many more.”

Parker was also the Junior League of Raleigh’s Sustainer of the Year for 2009, a 2008 Finance Impact Leader, and a recipient of the 2007 Women in Business Award.
