Wake Tech Welcomes New Trustee

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 28, 2013) - The Board of Trustees of Wake Technical Community College is pleased to welcome Tom Looney to its ranks. Appointed by the Wake County Board of Commissioners, Looney will be sworn in as the newest trustee on the 12-member board on Tuesday, August 20.

Looney is Vice President and General Manager for Lenovo North America. As such he is responsible for Lenovo’s relationship business in North America, which includes enterprise, public sector, federal and global accounts. Before joining Lenovo, Tom spent 31 years with IBM, most recently as Vice President of Sales for IBM’s personal computing division. Looney is a member of the Board of Trustees for the NC School of Science and Math and also serves as Chair of Transit for the Regional Transportation Alliance. He holds an undergraduate degree in Commerce from Niagara University in Lewiston, New York, and an MBA in Marketing from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Looney and his wife Lucy live in Cary.

“We are thrilled to have Tom joining our board,” says President Stephen C. Scott, “and the timing couldn’t be better. Tom brings technology expertise and experience with public-private partnerships that will be especially vital to Wake Tech’s future.”

Looney replaces Jim Herbst, who was recognized for his years of service.

Wake Tech is served by 12 trustees, all of whom are appointed: four by the governor, four by the Wake County Board of Commissioners, and four by the Wake County Board of Education. An ex-officio student representative (usually the president of Wake Tech’s Student Government Association) also serves on the board. Trustees establish policy for Wake Tech, approve the annual budget, and serve as advocates for the college and its services. Trustees also select the college president when that need arises.
