Wake Tech Receives Grant To Assist Immigrants

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 14, 2013) - Wake Technical Community College has received a $9,000 grant from the Mexican Consulate to help Hispanic immigrants earn educational credentials. The funds will support the La Plaza Comunitaria program as well as providing financial assistance for vocational training.

“We’re awarding funds to Wake Tech because the college supports Mexican immigrants in creating better lives for themselves and their families,” says General Javier Diaz de Leon, the Mexican Consul.

La Plaza Comunitaria is a Wake Tech program that includes tutoring, computer training, test prep, and instructional materials to help adults improve literacy skills. The program has been offered since 2006 and has assisted more than 450 students, many of whom had begun their schooling in Mexico. Credentials are certified, accredited, and issued by the Mexican government.

“We’re very proud of the students who have participated in La Plaza Comunitaria, and we commend them for their efforts,” says Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen C. Scott. “We will continue to be good stewards of these important resources so that we can support others in meeting their goals.”

The grant-funded program also allows for students to take certain vocational training classes, through Wake Tech’s Continuing Education Division. Classes include computer training; heating and air conditioning installation, maintenance, and repair; electrical wiring; and basic acrylic nail design and encapsulation.
