Wake Tech Hosts Regional Math Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 9, 2015) - Two hundred-eighty middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 24th annual Regional Math Contest hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Main Campus, included students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Guilford, and Lee counties.

Students competed in four categories, and top honors went to:

  • Max Tao, Smith Middle School, Level I (one year of math)
  • Aaron DeJong, Smith Middle School, Level II (two years of math)
  • Sam Ferguson, Thales Academy, Level III (three years of math)
  • Nikhil Reddy, Enloe High School, Comprehensive (more than three years of math)

WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present the awards. The top performers – ten from each level – move on to state finals competitions in these categories.

Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
