Local Students Compete in Annual Math Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 22, 2018) - Middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 27th annual Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Southern Wake Campus, included more than 250 students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, Lee, Franklin, and Carteret Counties.

Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they’ve completed: Levels I, II, and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who’ve had more than three years of math. Top honors went to:

  • Charles Tsai, Smith Middle School, Level I
  • Bo Chi, Smith Middle School,  Level II
  • Eli Park, Carnage Middle School, Level III
  • Xingjian (Jeffrey) Liu, Panther Creek High School, Comprehensive

The top performers move on to state finals competitions in their categories.

Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
