RALEIGH, N.C. (December 7, 2015) - “Penguins at Play,” a whimsical sugar showpiece, earned a gold medal for Wake Tech culinary student Kyle Starr! Starr took the top prize at today’s 2015 NC American Culinary Federation (ACF) Competition, in the Student Services Building Conference Center on Wake Tech’s Main Campus. More than 50 students from Wake Tech, Johnson and Wales University, and Central Piedmont Community College competed in categories that included buffet platters, cakes, breads, and showpieces.
Only Starr’s creation received enough points to earn gold. Five other entries received silver medals, and 27 earned bronze. Entries were judged on artistry, craftsmanship, theme, and presentation and were awarded points using the official ACF scale. Industry professionals also competed, including a Maryland chef who used the event to help prepare for the Culinary Olympics in Germany, where he will compete next year.
The event is an end-of-year project for students in Wake Tech’s associate degree programs in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts. They receive valuable, one-on-one critiques from the professionals who judge the competition. Wake Tech’s Culinary Arts degree program is fully accredited by the American Culinary Federation.
