Wake Tech Launches Language Translation Phone Line

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 4, 2016) - Wake Tech students, faculty, and staff now have a new way to communicate – in fact, they have more than 220 new ways! The college, in collaboration with its Campus Police department and English as a Second Language (ESL) program, has launched a language translation phone line to serve all those for whom English is not a native language. The phone line, dubbed “Translating to Success,” will provide rapid access to interpreters in more than 220 languages, to help communicate official business to the college community. Wake Tech is the only community college or university in North Carolina to have the translation phone line system.

The new technology addresses the needs of the many international students at Wake Tech seeking to learn English, prepare for high school equivalency testing, earn a degree, or complete workforce training. Students from more than 70 countries are currently enrolled in Wake Tech curriculum (for-credit) programs.

“The language line will be an invaluable tool in serving our international students,” says Campus Police Officer Michael Robinson. “It will allow us to respond to student concerns in a timely and appropriate manner, and it will be a tremendous help in providing security and handling medical and other emergencies.”

The line can be used from any phone for official Wake Tech business. Wake Tech staff and faculty who would like to use the service to better communicate with students may simply call the Campus Police department for a connection to the translation line.
