Special Ceremonies Commemorate 15th Anniversary of 9/11

RALEIGH, N.C. (September 9, 2016) - Wake Tech held tributes on two of its campuses on Friday, September 9, to mark the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Public Safety Education Campus held a special ceremony that included a candle lighting at the Memorial Wall, the placing of a wreath at the campus flagpole, and the release of doves. Local first responders were recognized, a Holly Springs K-9 unit was on hand, and two firetrucks displayed a giant American flag.

A Wake Tech employee shared memories of 9/11: Ian Gibbons, an employer relations coordinator, was working in New York City at the time and saw the planes hit the twin towers. “I remember feeling the impact and the heat,” Gibbons said. “Everyone started running away, but I walked toward the trade center and helped clear debris. I will never forget that day, but I am very glad I had the opportunity to contribute.”

The Northern Wake Campus held a tribute at the flagpole. It included the playing of TAPS, a flag lowering, and patriotic giveaways.

Wake Tech provides in-service training for approximately 8,000 law enforcement personnel each year, as well as Basic Law Enforcement Training and training for corrections officers through its Public Safety Training Academy. The academy is accredited by CALEA®, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, and housed on Wake Tech’s Public Safety Education Campus, which also provides training for Public Safety First Responders: fire and rescue personnel, EMTs, and detention officers; and SBI and Homeland Security personnel.
