Staci Irizarry Named 2016 Wake Tech Idol

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 4, 2016) - A very talented student has been named this year’s Wake Tech Idol! Staci Irizarry defeated eight other finalists to win the annual competition tonight, held on the Northern Wake Campus, and take home a $2,500 scholarship from the Wake Tech Foundation. Irizarry is a first-year student at Wake Tech who’s working toward entering the Medical Assistant program. Each of the two runners-up, Gennie Raybon and David Thomas, took home a $750 scholarship.

Dozens of Wake Tech students auditioned over a two-week period, and the top 10 were selected to appear in tonight’s grand finale. (One student dropped out of the competition at the last minute). Celebrity judges included Brian Dawson, radio personality from K97.5; Renee Chou, anchor/reporter from WRAL; and DeMar Neal, a Wake Tech music instructor who was a competitor on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. The judges chose the top three finalists, and the audience picked the winner. The event was emceed by Tom Brennan, Wake Tech’s Assistant Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety.

Wake Tech Idol engages the college community in friendly competition that highlights student talent as well as fine arts courses and programs at the college. The annual event is sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA).
