SunTrust Foundation Recognizes Wake Tech For 'Lighting the Way'

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 22, 2016) - Wake Tech Community College is proud to announce an inaugural “Lighting the Way” award from the SunTrust Foundation. Eight awards of $50,000 were given to non-profits across the Southeast for financial education programs. At Wake Tech, the funds will continue to support the SunTrust Center for Financial Education, which was established in 2013 to help students build money management skills and avoid debt. The center assists more than 500 students each year.

“The SunTrust Center for Financial Education has helped thousands of students,” says Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott. “Money management skills are absolutely critical, and with the support of SunTrust we’ve been able to offer students some very valuable tools and resources.”

The SunTrust Center for Financial Education offers financial empowerment workshops, games, contests and challenges, and a complimentary online learning center. Lessons cover a variety of topics, including credit, budgeting, entrepreneurship, financial psychology, banking, and investment basics.

The center has also launched a free app that offers videos, quick tips, and an interactive platform with lessons on budgeting, paying for school, paying off debt, and more. The goal is to build skills that can improve students’ financial future. The app is available for download on iTunes and Google Play. http://www.waketech.edu/financial-education

The Lighting the Way awards “recognize local organizations for their efforts in making a measurable impact on financial education,” according to David Fuller, president of the SunTrust Foundation.

SunTrust Bank and the SunTrust Foundation have been avid supporters of Wake Tech for more than 20 years. In 2009, they contributed $65,000 to establish the SunTrust Center for Strategic Futures, to address economic trends and help students prepare for tomorrow’s careers.
