RALEIGH, N.C. (March 23, 2017) - Middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the 26th annual Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on Wake Tech’s Southern Wake (Main) Campus, included 300 students from Wake, Chatham, Durham, Lee, Moore, and Orange Counties.
Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they’ve completed: Levels I, II, and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who’ve had more than three years of math. Top honors went to:
- Eli Park, Carnage Middle School, Level I
- Kenan Hasanaliyev, Triangle Math and Science Academy, Level II
- Jonathan Xu, Smith Middle School, Level III
- Emily Ryu, Green Hope High School, Comprehensive
WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present the awards. The top performers move on to state finals competitions in their categories.
Wake Tech is one of 16 regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
