Pharmacy Technology Students Host Flu Shot Clinic

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 17, 2023) – Wake Tech hosted a flu shot clinic at Perry Health Sciences Campus on Tuesday to celebrate National Pharmacy Week, which recognizes the invaluable contributions pharmacists and pharmacy technicians make to patient care.

The college's Pharmacy Technology program partnered with Nuevo Health Pharmacy in Knightdale to offer the clinic for staff, faculty and students.

The event gave Pharmacy Technology students the opportunity to see firsthand what is required to administer vaccinations, something they are learning how to do.

"Our students become certified immunizers," said Shannon Natale, the program's department head. "These are first-year students, so we wanted them to see how the process works."

Student Phuong Nguyen wants to become a pharmacist and believes the training will help her in her career.

"We learn how to work in the pharmacy field, how to fill prescriptions and all the regulations we need to follow," said Nguyen.

Wake Tech's Pharmacy Technology program trains students to assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, medical equipment and supplies, pharmaceutical care services and other health care products and services for patients.

"Our goal is to prepare students for the pharmacy industry, especially because there’s a shortage right now for pharmacy technicians," Natale said.
