International Students Celebrate Native Cultures

RALEIGH, NC (November 21, 2022) – Wake Tech celebrated its diverse student body with International Day events at Scott Northern Wake and Southern Wake campuses.

Students from 40 countries shared history, photos, artifacts, food, performances and more about their homelands to broaden the college's knowledge and awareness of culture and countries beyond the United States.

This semester, Wake Tech has international students from 130 countries, and India, Morocco, China, Mexico and Venezuela are the top five native lands.

"This is a great opportunity for our incredibly diverse student body to share about their own cultures," said Martha Swanson, associate professor and advisor of English as a Foreign Language. "I don't think everyone realizes how many countries we have represented at Wake Tech."

International Day has been a popular student event for the college for more than 20 years, but the pandemic put it on pause in 2020. The International Friends Club and Student Activities were glad to bring it back for the enjoyment of students, faculty and staff.

"It's important to learn about other cultures in the world because it gives you a better understanding of our global world. And for our international students, this event is their opportunity to share about their culture and feel more included in the Wake Tech community," Swanson added.
