Two Students Selected for 'People Helping People' Scholarship

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 12, 2022) - Wake Tech students Larry Harvey and Briana McKoy-Gilchrist are among 116 recipients chosen from the 58 North Carolina community colleges for the 2022 State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) Foundation's "People Helping People" Scholarship.

The scholarship is valued at up to $5,000 each and recognizes students who are most deserving of an opportunity to attend college. The scholarship committee also evaluates recipients based on leadership, excellence in character, integrity and who best exemplifies the "People Helping People" philosophy of the SECU.

Harvey is studying Supply Chain Management. He's been working in the supply chain industry for more than a decade and chose to come back to Wake Tech to pair the knowledge of the field with the experience he's received on the job.

"Receiving this scholarship removes so much of the financial burden," Harvey said. "It gives you the confidence to push forward. Finding a way to pay for classes while going through the challenges we have today, it can discourage you. Having this scholarship has helped me push forward to completion."

McKoy-Gilchrist is pursuing her Associate in Science degree and plans to transfer to North Carolina Central University upon graduation and continue her studies in nutrition and dietetics.

"This scholarship means a great opportunity for someone who is not financially able to pay for college out of pocket," McKoy-Gilchrist said. "I've never had a scholarship before, so this is a personal motivator to work hard and stay on track to graduate."

The SECU Foundation established the "People Helping People" Scholarship program to assist students across North Carolina with their educational goals. Since being established, the scholarship program represents an annual commitment of more than $5 million, with a collective total of more than $81 million since the initial scholarship funding began in 2005.
