RALEIGH, N.C. (April 6, 2022) – The Center for Building Technologies on Wake Tech's Southern Wake Campus was bustling today as students and local employers connected during the first Skilled Trades Career Fair in the new building.
More than 150 students dressed their best shared their resumes and delivered their creative elevator pitches to 35 employers looking to hire apprentices and part-time and full-time workers in high-demand air conditioning, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, welding and building automation jobs.
Will Bolton, owner of Bolton Construction Service, said he was excited to see students curious and passionate about their future careers in skilled trades.
"We’re here today because we need solid employees that we can build up," Bolton said. "There are so many career opportunities within skilled trades, and, unfortunately, there's a deficient in the number of people going into the field. It's really good to see so many students engaged in the trades and the volume of students I've seen here today is impressive."
Thomas Roberts said he learned a lot at the event about the different skilled trades jobs at the various companies. "I'm studying both electrical and HVAC here at Wake Tech, and this event is really helping me figure out which career path I want take because I'm able to ask employers questions about what to expect in these jobs," he said.
Before the event, Wake Tech Career Services helped students polish their resumes and offered them success tips, including conversation starters and general preparation guidance like the importance of shaking hands and researching companies in advance.
"We spent all last week working on and improving our resume, and that definitely helped me be a lot more prepared as I'm talking to employers today," Roberts said.
