Meal Giveaway Supports Students in Need at Thanksgiving

College Partners with Food Lion to Distribute Food

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 2, 2021) - More than 350 Wake Tech students will have a Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings thanks to a food giveaway partnership between the college and Food Lion.

On Monday, faculty and staff volunteers packed meal bags filled with ingredients for side dishes, dessert,  and a gift card for a Butterball turkey donated by Food Lion as part of the A Wake & Thankful initiative. Students who reserved a meal will pick up their bags at their designated campus next week.

A Wake & Thankful is one project of “The Nest,” Wake Tech’s food pantry program, which operates food pantries at Scott Northern Wake, Southern Wake, Perry Health Sciences, RTP and Western Wake campuses. There is also a food pantry at the Beltline Education Center.

“We are so appreciative of the support of Food Lion and our faculty and staff volunteers who are here packing these special meal kits for our students,” said Kela Farmer, Coordinator of Volunteerism and Student Leadership. There is definitely a need in our community, and we are here to help fill it.”

The Nest Food Pantry is a free resource available to all current Wake Tech students. In addition to special holiday initiatives like A Wake & Thankful, students can also shop monthly and build their own custom food orders online.

Wake Tech has a strong partnership with Food Lion in the effort to help students in need. In 2019, Food Lion associates and community food bank partners renovated Wake Tech’s food pantries – and stocked them with nutritious food. Food Lion also presented Wake Tech with a generous $125,000 gift to expand college efforts to help students and their families combat food insecurity.
