Careers Electric™ High School Summer Academy

Wake Tech and the Wake County Public School System have partnered to provide an opportunity for current and rising high school seniors to attend the six-week Careers Electric™ High School Summer Academy.

Careers Electric™ is a national workforce initiative designed to expand access to high-quality electrical training and create clear pathways into well-paying, in-demand careers. The summer academy is an integral component of this effort, and students interested in learning about career opportunities in the rapidly evolving field of residential, commercial and industrial electrical systems installation and maintenance are invited to apply.

Selected applicants get a jump-start on their career aspirations through classroom instruction led by Wake Tech faculty and on-the-job training through internships, all while earning a $2,000 stipend, accumulating six hours of college credit by completing Residential Wiring and National Electrical Code courses and serving in a registered pre-apprenticeship.

The academy runs from June 15 through July 27. Classes are held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesday at Wake Tech's Southern Wake Campus. On Thursdays and Fridays, students report to an assigned local electrical employer for on-the-job training and work-based learning. Students are expected to attend at least 90% of scheduled sessions.

Students will be provided with all necessary instructional materials, including textbooks, safety equipment and hand tools. Students must provide their own transportation to Wake Tech and to their assigned employer, but transportation assistance may be available.

Eligibility requirements

  • Wake County high school senior or junior (expected to graduate in May/June 2026 or May/June 2027)
  • Legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Applied for the Career & College Promise dual-enrollment program at Wake Tech (Electrical Systems Technology Pathway - C35130CH)

Interested students are encouraged to speak with their career development coordinator and Career and Technical Education faculty for additional information. They also can email Wake Tech Electrification Training Project Director Todd Campbell at [email protected].

Students and parents should register for and attend one of the following one-hour, online information sessions:

  • 6 p.m. March 19
  • 6 p.m. March 24

The application deadline is March 29. The selection process includes a formal interview. Students chosen for the academy will be notified in early May.
