Law Enforcement Driver Training

This class will provide the student with the knowledge necessary for operating a vehicle while performing the functions of a law enforcement officer during normal, emergency response and pursuit driving situations. Topics covered in this class will be: Driving maneuvers that frequently contribute to law enforcement vehicular collisions; Factors for emergency response considerations; Psychological and physiological factors that may affect an officer's perceptions and judgment during an emergency; and Factors concerning vehicular pursuit in various situations. Practical driving exercises will follow classroom instruction.

Course Objectives

Analyze officer fatality data from the past ten (10) years to determine the number of officers that were killed nationally and statewide due to vehicle accidents and the factors that led to the deaths

Identify the driving maneuvers that frequently contribute to law enforcement vehicular collisions.

List and discuss the factors for emergency response consideration.

Identify the psychological and physiological factors that may affect an officer's perceptions and judgment during an emergency response.

Identify factors concerning vehicular pursuits in the following situations:
a. Justifying the initial pursuit
b. Continuing the pursuit
c. Terminating the pursuit

Clinical Site/Special Facilities

Classroom equipped with Computer; LCD projector; Screen. Law enforcement vehicles; cones, stop watch, clip board and a suitable area for conducting practical driving courses.
