This course provides an opportunity to adapt foundational math concepts utilized in health care occupations. Topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers; simplifying a fraction; metric system conversion; reading gauges and graphs; reading a scale; reading and recording measurements; converting from inches to feet/feet to inches; temperature conversion; converting from pounds to kilograms/kilograms to pounds; skip-counting by twos and 10s; household system conversion; and calculating medication dosage. Upon completion, you should be able to build a stronger foundation using the math concepts used in your chosen health care occupation.

Course Objectives

Focus on the specific math you need to know to be successful as a student and practice in your chosen health care profession

Outline of Instruction

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

Simplify fractions

Perform metric system conversion

Plot and read a graph

Read measurements using a ruler (mm, cm, inches, feet) and convert from inches to feet and feet to inches

Read a thermometer and convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius and Celsius to Fahrenheit

Read a scale and convert from pounds to kilograms and kilograms to pounds

Skip counting by twos and 10s (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. or 10, 20, 30, 40, etc.)

Perform household system conversion

Calculate medication dosages
