Adult High School Students Earn Diplomas

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 8, 2020) – Ivion Davis and 34 other students who never finished high school celebrated the special milestone of earning their high school diploma on Saturday.

Students who completed the Adult High School program at Wake Tech this spring officially received their diplomas during a drive-thru pick-up ceremony at the Beltline Education Center.

Two years ago, Davis was 17 and a rising junior when she dropped out because of a medical condition. “It feels great,” she said. When I left high school, I honestly didn’t know if I was going to be able to finish. Wake Tech gave me that chance, and I’m really grateful.”

In the Adult High School program, students complete the courses that they did not finish in high school to earn 22 credits as required by the NC Future Ready Core standards. Students take computer-based courses one at a time, and courses are tuition-waived.

Susan Martin, instructional program specialist for the AHS program, said this class of students faced new challenges because of the pandemic.

“They not only had to continue working on their own courses but had to work through the adjustment of their new family dynamic whether that be having parents or spouses working from home while also helping their own children navigate school virtually,” Martin said. “They certainly stepped up and have shown their grit and determination, and we are very proud of their accomplishment.

Now that Davis, an avid video game player, has earned her high school diploma she said she has her sights on college and pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Simulation and Game Development.

“Game design is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid, and now I hope I can get that chance at Wake Tech,” she said.

In addition to the Adult High School program, Wake Tech also offers high school equivalency test preparation. Learn more about these programs here.
