Intro to Medical Sonography

This course is designed to provide an introduction to Medical Sonography. Topics include applications, terminology, history, patient care, ethics and basic skills. Upon completion, students should also be able to define sonographic applications, basic patient care skills and preliminary scanning techniques. This class does not lead to a certification and does not qualify a student to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT RT(S)) certifications, and students are not qualified to work as diagnostic medical sonographers.

Upon successful completion, this course is part of competitive entry criteria for Wake Tech's Sonography program.

Course Objectives

Define sonography

Discuss how patient consent, privacy and chaperones are important for the sonographer

Discuss various approaches used in communicating with patients who require special assistance

Describe the sonographer's role in relation to medical ethics.

Explain the national standard of care required of sonographers

Describe the functional skills expected of a diagnostic medical sonographer.
