Community Health Worker

This course is designed to provide individuals with the required knowledge, tools, resources, and experience to become a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) in North Carolina working in a variety of healthcare and community settings (Health Departments, Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Clinics, Faith-based Organizations, etc.).
Instruction is designed to cover the nine core competencies essential to working as a certified CHW which include communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal, advocacy, outreach, personal/professional skills. The knowledge base competencies will cover health and social issues that disproportionately impact clients including but not limited to chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and cancer.

Some of the social issues covered will include safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation and adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Students will also learn about the changing health care landscape in North Carolina and how to work with their clients in connecting them to resources through NCCARES 360 and others.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible for listing as a NC Certified Community Health Worker through the North Carolina Community Health Worker Association.

Requirements for Successful Completion

80% attendance
● Attendance
Regular attendance is required for the student to complete all course requirements and receive the optimum benefit of instruction. In the event of an absence, it is the student's responsibility to make up all missed work. Failure to make up missed work will adversely affect the student's course grade. The maximum number of classes a student can miss without being dropped from the course is four (4) classes. Any student who misses more than the total allotted hours of no more than 4 days, is no longer eligible to receive a certificate of completion and will not be able to return to class.

● Participation
Students are expected to be fully present in class and participate in discussion and activities. Those who attend virtual or hybrid classes are required to have access to a computer (PC or Mac), laptop, or tablet with a functional webcam, high-speed Internet access. They are also required to do approximately 2 - 3 hours of additional self study for in class discussion on certain key topics such as group facilitation, motivational interviewing, care management, and mental health and wellness training.
