Adult Beginning Guitar

Welcome to the exciting world of Adult Beginning Guitar! Get ready to embark on a thrilling journey through the fundamentals of guitar playing with a group of like-minded explorers who want to make a new sound in the world. We designed this course to take you from basic chords and strumming techniques to riffs/solos and on to fingerstyle approaches. Throughout the course, students will participate in engaging and interactive group activities that will both challenge and inspire. There will be opportunity to collaborate with fellow students, share progress, and celebrate achievements together. So, whether you are looking to start a new hobby, fulfill a lifelong dream of playing the guitar, or just want to meet new people and have musical fun, this course is for you!

Course Objectives

Identify the various parts of a guitar and understand their functions.

Demonstrate basic musical concepts such as notes, chords, scales, rhythm, the Nashville Number system, and improvisations.

Interpret a chord diagram, chord charts, and guitar tablature, and employ close listening to follow song flow and structure.

Play basic "first-position" chords such as C, G, D, A, E, F, maj7, B7, Em, and Am7 and be able to transition smoothly between them.

Demonstrate strumming patterns, including downstrokes, upstrokes, and alternating patterns.

Improvise simple melodies and songs using the basic chords, the pentatonic scale, adding-in hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends, and vibrato to shape tone and add personal style.

Incorporate basic fingerpicking techniques, including the Travis pattern, several Travis variations, and other approaches.

Compare and contrast unique styles of music, including folk, rock, and pop, and gain an appreciation for the diverse range of sounds that the guitar can produce.

Develop confidence to perform in front of others and feel proud of the progress made in one's guitar playing.
