Course Offerings

Many law enforcement officers who are nearing retirement find that navigating the retirement system can be a daunting task. Decisions made at the end of a career can have a tremendous effect on post-retirement planning. Through lecture, classroom discussion, demonstration, and practical exercises, students will develop an understanding of the North Carolina retirement system for law enforcement officers. The course covers pension benefits, NC 401K, Special Separation Allowance, and other aspects concerning LEO retirement after a career of full-time sworn service.

Course Objectives

Describe the major components of the NC Retirement System.

List and define three (3) factors for calculating the retirement formula.


List and explain at least five (5) barriers to retirement planning.

During a classroom exercise, demonstrate the steps involved in calculating the approximate pension benefit.

During a classroom exercise, demonstrate the steps involved in calculating the total state retirement benefit.
