Medical Coding for Outpatient & Inpatient Services: Part 1

In partnership with Career Step, Wake Tech offers part one of a two-part course preparing students for careers in the medical industry. Coding and billing professionals translate medical records into standardized codes that are used to bill patients and third-party payers, such as Medicare and private insurance companies. Students will also learn administrative office practices relating to health information management, electronic health records, laws and ethics, computer fundamentals, and biomedical sciences (medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology). This program is trusted by leaders in the health care field nationwide. Upon completion, students will be prepared to take the CBCS, CPC, COC or CCS-P certification exams.

Course Objectives

Identify basic computer hardware and interpret system requirements.

Describe characteristics of healthcare delivery and settings in the United States.


Identify law and regulations related to the healthcare workplace.


Analyze how medical terms are build using common word parts.


Demonstrate how patient records are used and regulated.


Identify major body systems and the organs that comprise them.


Identify major drug standards, legislation, legal responsibilities of the health care practitioner when dispensing medications.


Describe the role medical records take in coding and billing.


Use effective decision-making process to maximize your chances for success.
