RALEIGH, N.C. (June 30, 2025) – An impressive showing for two recent Wake Tech graduates at the 2025 SkillsUSA national competition in Atlanta.
Jimmy Chavez-Perez placed second in Architectural Drafting and Tyler Collins earned ninth place in Welding Sculpture.
The SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference is the largest gathering of America’s future skilled workforce and the ultimate recognition of excellence in career and technical education. Chavez-Perez and Collins put their skills to the test alongside more than 6,500 state champions competing for medals in various skills and leadership competitions.
"Competing at SkillsUSA and earning second place nationally was a turning point for me,” said Chavez-Perez. “It sharpened my eye for details and taught me how to stay focused under pressure.”
Chavez-Perez, who graduated in May with an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Architectural Technology, says Wake Tech helped him design a path to success.
"Wake Tech prepared me with strong technical skills and the mindset to think critically and solve problems independently. I am so grateful for all the support I have received. It has inspired me to be a role model for my siblings and for the Hispanic community.”
Tyler Collins also graduated in May. He earned an AAS degree in Welding Technology.
This is the fourth straight year that Wake Tech students have qualified for nationals.
Six students from Vernon Malone College and Career Academy also brought home awards:
- Tise Iyiola, Christian Nourie, June Strickland and Alejandro Armas, 13th place in Entrepreneurship
- Caleb Smith and Mavric Eis, 16th place in 3D Visualization and Animation
The SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference is an annual week-long celebration of the skilled trades and the accomplishments of career-ready leaders from across the U.S. The event brings together more than 17,500 attendees, including students, instructors, industry partners, government officials, administrators and more.
