Wake Tech is closed Friday in observance of Good Friday. Prospective students can still apply online. The college will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday.

New Board Members Bring Experience to the Wake Tech Foundation

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 7, 2020) – Four local business leaders have joined the board of directors of the Wake Tech Foundation: Greg Boone, Scarlet Edwards, Dana Martinez, and William Smith. The new members were chosen for their leadership in the community and commitment to Wake Tech’s mission. 

Greg Boone is the co-chief executive officer of Blue Acorn iCi, a company that specializes in helping clients develop a superior digital customer experience by combining analytics, digital commerce, customer experience, and direct-to-consumer services. Boone, who was named NC Tech's 2018 Tech Executive of the Year, has also spoken at NC Tech industry events including their annual State of Technology conference and most recently, the Diversity + Inclusion Summit. He has also had the opportunity to address several business essentials classes through NC State’s Executive Education Program. Born and raised in Durham, Boone now lives in Cary with his wife and two children.

Scarlet Edwards is the associate vice president of military, veterans & special programs at Wake Tech. In her role, Edwards builds and adapts programs to meet changing student needs. She was a key contributor to the Completion by Design initiative at Wake Tech, serving in the early stages as a facilitator and later designing and implementing advising interventions to support student retention. Prior to joining Wake Tech, Edwards worked at Nash Community College. She also has experience in K-12 education, mental health, and early childhood intervention settings. Edwards holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a master’s degree in community counseling from Appalachian State University. 

As the senior manager of corporate affairs, Dana Martinez is responsible for leading the internal and external communications strategy for Biogen in RTP. Representing corporate affairs, Martinez works to drive internal communications and manages key stakeholder relations including local media. Prior to joining Biogen, Martinez was the vice president of government affairs at the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce where she headed the lobbying arm of the Triangle’s largest nonprofit business membership organization. Martinez also served as a liaison with the NCWorks Commission, which oversees the state’s workforce development system, crafts policy, and advises the Governor, General Assembly, state and local agencies, and businesses on how to strengthen the state’s workforce.

William Smith is an advanced planning advisor with Capitol Financial Solutions. He specializes in financial leadership, investment management, and retirement income strategies, all using a fiduciary‐based approach. Smith is a big supporter of the community college philosophy and supports various charitable organizations. He is also a member of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. Smith received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. He lives in Raleigh with his wife and two sons.

The Foundation board has also established a new leadership team that includes Whitney Westbrook (Chair), Tim Burgess (Treasurer), and Dr. Scott Ralls (Secretary). The Foundation’s executive director is Matt Smith.

Other board members are Mary-Ann Baldwin, Douglas Ball, Nathan Becker, Natalie Best, Tim Burgess, Creighton Blackwell, Alisa Wright Colopy, Mike Conlon, David “Buzz” Crosby, Tommy Laakso, Arne Morris, Nick Neptune, Pat O’Keefe, Cheryl Parquet, Andy Penry, Kim Raynor, Johnny Rankin, Walt Tippett, Sharma Vemuri, and Pat Wilkins.
