College Hosts Curbside Graduation Celebration for Future Barbers

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 2, 2020) – Nearly twenty students who have completed Wake Tech’s barbering certificate program picked up their graduation stoles today during a curbside celebration at the college’s Public Safety Education Campus. Students will wear the stoles during a virtual graduation ceremony on July 7.

Now that personal care businesses have re-opened after being shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, barbers are in high demand. More than half of the students have already found jobs.

“I am so proud of these students, said William Graham,” instructor and director of Wake Tech’s Barbering School. “They are dedicated to their craft and I am excited to see them pursue their next chapter!”

Wake Tech’s year-long non-degree barbering program teaches students the art of haircutting, shaving, beard trimming, applying hair tonics and color, and facial massage. In light of the current pandemic, the NC Board of Barber Examiners has rescheduled the required certification exams for July. Students have been given a “permission to work” permit so they can work prior to taking the exam. They are employed as an apprentice for at least a year and then can take a second exam for their master barber license.

There are several online information sessions over the next month for prospective students. For more information, visit barbering.waketech.edu.
