Wake Tech’s Western Wake Campus Hosts Open House
RALEIGH, N.C. (July 11, 2013) – Wake Tech’s Western Wake Campus welcomed the community to an open house today, part of a year-long 50thanniversary celebration taking place across all of Wake Tech’s campuses. The Western Wake event, dubbed “Success in the West,” brought instructors, administrators, and visitors together to recognize successes and find out about exciting new initiatives. Special guests included former Wake Tech President Dr. Bruce Howell and Wake County commissioners Joe Bryan and James West.
The Western Wake Campus opened in 2005, offering a convenient location for students to pursue associate’s degrees for college transfer and for entrepreneurs to find resources to help business ventures thrive. Western Wake gained full campus status in 2008 and now serves more than 5,000 students every semester.
“Western Wake really marked the beginning of a tremendous ‘growth spurt’ for Wake Tech,” said Senior Vice President Bryan Ryan. “It’s a small but resource-rich campus.”
Success stories highlighted at the open house included sisters Gabrina and Gabri Johnson, who earned an associate in arts degrees and will be transferring to UNC-Greensboro to pursue bachelor’s degrees; and Keith Gray, a former professional athlete who has earned his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Small business successes include Chris Angel, who took a Wake Tech course called “Planning the Entrepreneurial Venture” and went on to open Sparians, a successful boutique bowling lounge in Raleigh.
The Western Wake Campus is home to Wake Tech’s Small Business Center and to the Business and Industry Services Division, which includes customized training. It also offers a host of continuing education courses and programs, including medical billing and coding, computer technologies, and BioWork.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have Wake Tech’s Business and Industry Division here,” said Wake County Commissioner James West. “The expertise and training it offers have attracted giants like Novartis to Holly Springs, and more recently, MetLife, which is bringing hundreds of high-paying jobs to Cary.”
The Western Wake Campus is located in Millpond Village, on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary. Sponsors for the open house included Millpond Village neighbors McDonald’s, Lowes Foods, San Remo Italian Grill, Camos Brothers Pizza and Jersey Mike’s.
