Wake Tech Partners Recognized for Excellence
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 23, 2015) - Each year, Wake Tech Community College recognizes local companies that have made outstanding contributions in support of the mission and vision of the college. President Stephen C. Scott gave the awards to four community partners at the annual Excellence Awards banquet on April 23.
ABB was named Corporate Benefactor of the Year. The company has invested more than $155,000 in Wake Tech’s Electronics Engineering and Electrical Systems Technology departments, to support faculty innovation, student scholarships, and equipment that allows students to train on the latest products and systems. ABB has also provided valuable co-op and employment opportunities for Wake Tech students.
Wake Tech Board Member Mike Desmond received the Individual Spirit of Giving award. Desmond has served on the board since 2009 and given generously of his time and talent. He has made personal contributions and helped to secure others totaling nearly $200,000. That support has provided more than 70 student scholarships, multiple vehicle donations, and co-op and employment opportunities for students in Wake Tech’s Automotive program.
Judge Paul Gessner, a 1985 graduate of Wake Tech’s Criminal Justice program, earned the Distinguished Alumni Award. After completing an associate’s degree at Wake Tech, Judge Gessner earned a bachelor’s degree and went on to graduate from law school. He served as a prosecutor and was elected to serve as a Wake County District Court Judge. Ten years later, he was elected to serve on North Carolina’s Superior Court, where he presides over jury trials in 34 counties.
Dorothy McKelvie was given the Volunteer of the Year Award. Dorothy has been volunteering in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes twice a week for more than five years. McKelvie helps students read, speak and understand English. She also makes home visits and provides transportation. Most recently, she has been helping students transition to the new Beltline Education Center.
