Practical Wildlife Rehabilitation - Mammals



Interested in mammal rehabilitation? A state-licensed wildlife rehabilitator shows you how to rescue some native North Carolina wildlife, including Eastern grey squirrels, flying squirrels, opossums, cottontails and fawns. Course sections include capturing, triage, animal control, supportive care, licensing and paperwork.

Course Objectives

Learn practical aspects of emergency mammal rescue and supportive care

Use experience from class to apply for a license


Outline of Instruction

Identification: What species you can legally work with, identifying when an animal is in need of help and reuniting strategies

Capturing an Injured or Orphaned Mammal: What you need in your car; the first 24 hours; emergency set ups; how to determine injured, orphaned and reunite possibility; and building box set ups exercise

The First 48 Hours: Determine if vet care is needed, treating shock and initial triage

What You Need: Supplies and equipment, preventing attacks and escape and incubator set ups exercise

Basic Daily Care: Diet, cleaning, signs of problems and splinting and penis wraps exercise
